Deputy Gabe Garrison interviewed the boys who climbed the hillside behind the post office and found a man's body.

Sergeant John Evans of Happy Camp and four forensic investigators from Yreka examined the scene. The cause of death is unknown at this time.

Man Identified

November 1, 2005 - The man who died behind the post office on Davis Road has been positively identified through personal identifying information received from family members as Lawrence "Larry" Robert Berryman, age 55, of Happy Camp. The autopsy to determine exact cause of death has been scheduled for Thursday, 11/3/05.

October 31, 2005 - The Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office released this information today:

At 12:46 p.m. on 10/30/05, the Sheriff's Department received a call reporting that a body had been found by two children on a trail along a cut bank between a market on Davis Road and the Post Office in Happy Camp.

Deputies arrived and found the body believed to be that of a 55-year old man that reportedly had been in the Happy Camp area since the spring of 2005. Detectives and evidence technicians were called out to process the scene. It appears as though the man had been dead for several days.

Although no obvious cause of death was found, the death is being investigated as a suspicious death until an autopsy to determine identity and exact cause of death can be completed in the next several days.

October 30, 2005 - Two boys climbed the steep hillside behind the Happy Camp post office, just for fun. What they found at the top shocked them. There, on a flat area of the hillside, just above the level of the post office roof, lay the remains of a man. Neither boy recognized him.

Deputy Gabe Garrison and Sergeant John Evans investigated. Soon they were joined by a team of forensic investigators from Yreka. Evans was unable to say whether he knew the person or what the cause of death might be.

Both Garrison and Evans climbed the steep hillside between the death scene and the Karuk housing area. The man could have died from a fall.

A rumor circulated that this was a teenager, but the boys who discovered the deceased said he had a gray beard and had been there a while.
